PARIS, Jan 19, 2006 (AFP) - An appeals court on Thursday upheld charges of complicity against the wife of self-confessed French serial killer Michel Fourniret, accused of murdering at least seven women over a 15-year period.

Lawyers for Monique Olivier, 57, who is accused as an accessory in five cases of kidnapping and murder, had called for four of the cases to be struck out under France's statute of limitations.

Her husband, a 63-year-old carpenter who had been behind bars in Belgium since June 2003, was extradited to France last month to face trial over seven murders — six in France and one in Belgium — committed between 1987 and 2001.

Olivier has also been extradited to face trial as an accessory to kidnapping and imprisonment leading to death, and as an accessory to rape.

Her confessions in June 2004, a year after Fourniret's arrest for the botched kidnapping of a 13-year-old girl, led to the charges against her husband.

Fourniret has since confessed to some of the killings and France and Belgium have agreed for a first trial to be held in France, expected to take place in the eastern Ardennes region by the end of the year.

But the case is not closed -- police suspect him of 13 killings of young women and teenagers on both sides of the border.

Thursday's ruling concerned the murders of 17-year-old Isabelle Laville in 1987, 20-year-old Fabienne Leroy in 1988 and 22-year-old Jeanne-Marie Desramault in 1989, and the kidnapping of 13-year-old Natacha Danais in 1990.

The fifth case against Olivier, concerning the murder of 12-year-old Elizabeth Brichet in 1989, was opened separately by Belgian prosecutors and was taken on by the French authorities following her extradition.
