Paris - Paris' century-old American bookstore, Brentano's, Saturday opened for its last day of trade after being placed in receivership in June.

Faced by a steep hike in rent, the shop set up in 1895 and centrally located near the Paris Opera has been unable to make ends meet, said Chantal Bodez, who ran the store with husband Jean-Marc.

"Our customers are sad but there's nothing we can do," Bodez, who pays rent to bank BNP-Paribas, told AFP as dozens of clients lined up for discounts.

France's Bookstore Association said after Brentano's was placed into receivership that the shop's financial woes were typical of many central city bookshops, facing high rents and small profit margins.
