HEILIGENDAMM, Germany, June 7, 2007 (AFP) - The wife of newly elected French President Nicolas Sarkozy made an elegant first appearance on the international scene with her husband at a dinner to open the Group of Eight summit Wednesday.

Cecilia Sarkozy arrived at a castle near this exclusive Baltic Sea resort for the dinner at her husband's side, wearing a black cocktail dress decorated with silver sequins.

Earlier she had stepped from the French presidential jet in a flowing white trouser suit.

The 49-year-old former model and PR executive intrigued France during this year's election campaign as she made brief appearances with her husband following a stormy period in their 11-year marriage culminating in a brief separation in 2005.

Her limited role in the conservative's campaign raised questions as to how much she would enjoy fitting into the role of France's first lady.

She admitted in a French newspaper interview two years ago that the idea of the role "bored" her.

On Thursday, as her husband begins formal talks on climate change and aid to Africa, Cecilia was to join Laura Bush, Cherie Blair and the other G8 leaders' wives in a programme of events led by the only man in the group -- Joachim Sauer, the husband of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

But a spokesman for the president said Cecilia would leave the summit before it ends on Friday because it is the 20th birthday of her youngest daughter from her first marriage.
