Cash machine robbery turns fatal - for robber

PARIS, Feb 10, 2006 (AFP) - A would-be robber trying to blow the cover off a bank's automatic cash machine in southern France died overnight when he got caught in the blast, police said Friday.

PARIS, Feb 10, 2006 (AFP) - A would-be robber trying to blow the cover off a bank's automatic cash machine in southern France died overnight when he got caught in the blast, police said Friday.

The man, aged in his 30s, had been pumping an inflammable gas into the machine in the small village of La Redorte near the Mediterranean coast when the mixture ignited prematurely, fatally injuring him.

His accomplice called paramedics, and was quickly arrested by police called to the scene.
