PARIS, Aug 22 (AFP) - A Frenchman was in custody Monday after being involved in a traffic accident that resulted in a Sri Lankan woman and her two-year-old daughter being killed when a car ploughed into the Paris cafe where they were sitting, police said.

The unidentified man was "under the influence of cocaine" at the time of the accident late Sunday, an officer said.

According to police and witnesses, the man's car hit the back of a Mercedes making a sudden sharp right-hand turn, sending it veering off the street and into the entrance of the cafe, where it hit the 40-year-old woman and her child seated at a pavement table.

The woman, crushed under the front wheels of the Mercedes, was taken to one Paris hospital and her daughter to another but both died of their severe injuries. A companion, also Sri Lankan, was hurt in the accident. All three resided in Paris.

The driver of the Mercedes, a French surgeon in his 40s, was slightly hurt. He, too, was taken into custody pending the outcome of an initial investigation.

The corner cafe is on a boulevard in the heart of Paris lined with establishments popular with tourists.
