A Thai director's Cannes-winning reincarnation movie "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives" opened to rave reviews in France but has flopped at the box office, industry data showed Thursday.

After a week in French cinemas, Apichatpong Weerasethakul's work has failed to make it into the top 10 most-seen films, making it the worst showing for a Cannes winner in the past decade, trade magazine Le Film Francais said.

The two-hour movie tells the story of a dying man, Boonmee, who meets spirits of the dead. Among many surprises, his son appears as a giant monkey and an old-world princess has watery sex with a talking catfish.

It was ousted from the French top 10 of the week by films like the Angelina Jolie spy thriller "Salt", "Piranha 3D" and "Inception".
