Thieves broke into the Paris home of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's ex-wife Cecilia Attias and made off with half a million euros in jewels and valuables.

PARIS - The robbery took place early this month at a luxury apartment in the plush suburb of Neuilly owned by the former French first lady and her new husband, the events organisers Richard Attias.

The couple, who live in Dubai with Cecilia's young son Louis, were not there at the time, according to officials with knowledge of the investigation.

According to Le Parisien newspaper, the thieves broke in by smashing a first-floor window. The robbery, estimated at 500,000 euros (650,000 dollars) was discovered by a cleaner who reported it to police.

Investigators are trying to determine whether Cecilia Attias was deliberately targeted because of her links to the president, officials said.

Sarkozy and his second wife Cecilia announced their divorce in October 2007, five months after the French leader's election, ending a stormy 11-year marriage.

Cecilia married her Moroccan-born lover Attias, for whom she had briefly left Sarkozy in 2005, in New York the following March.
