Bulgarian PM reveals 'fierce' Sarkozy-Barroso clash on Roma

French President Nicolas Sarkozy and European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso clashed fiercely at lunch over France's Roma expulsions, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said Thursday.

"There was a fierce exchange," Borisov said on the sidelines of a European summit after Barroso backed his justice chief Viviane Reding in raising the threat of legal action against Paris this week.

"I'm not going to deny there was a clash," added another senior EU source after Sarkozy's France reacted angrily to Reding's suggestion that Paris returning Roma Gypsies to Bulgaria and Romania represented a throwback to the days of World War II.
