German and Bulgarian police have arrested 12 Bulgarian men accused of trafficking women to Germany and France and forcing them into prostitution, the Bulgarian interior ministry said Thursday.

In an international operation, police arrested nine people in Bonn, Germany, including the alleged ringleader, plus three more in Bulgaria, the ministry said in a statement.

Police also found at least 11 Bulgarian women who had been forced by the gang to work as prostitutes in Bonn and Cologne, it added.

The ministry did not say whether any more trafficked women had been found in France, but said the police operation was still ongoing.
