SOFIA - Bulgarian and French police have broken up a criminal ring trafficking Bulgarian women to France to work as prostitutes, the interior ministry here announced Tuesday.

A total of three men were arrested during a police operation in Bulgaria's Black Sea resort of Varna and another 18 suspected members of the ring were arrested in France, with five of them currently held in custody in Bordeaux, the ministry said in a statement.

At least 14 Bulgarian women, all aged over 18, fell victims of the gang that sexually exploited them.

Between March and September 2007, the women transferred from France "extremely large sums of money" to the traffickers' accounts in Bulgarian banks, it added.
