LILLE, France, March 24 (AFP) - A 45-year-old Briton was to appear in a court in northern France on Wednesday following his arrest for drug smuggling after French officials discovered 5,000 ecstasy tablets hidden under the backseat of his car, authorities said.

The man, a carpenter who had been working in Spain over the past few months, was "very well known - in a bad way - to British police," a French customs officer said.

He was arrested Monday and allegedly confessed that he had been engaged to deliver the ecstasy to another British man in Spain.

The customs officers who searched him and his Spanish-registered vehicle found a fake identity document and several fake credit cards.
