MEAUX, France, Dec 22, 2006 (AFP) - A 12 year-old boy who collapsed after being hit in a fight in a school east of Paris died of heart failure, doctors said Friday.

The boy — named only as Karl — died Thursday after a brawl during a PE class at the Albert Camus middle school in the town of Meaux.

"Death was mainly due to the emotional shock that resulted from the fight. It was a major heart problem that killed Karl. This is what emerges from the first results of the autopsy," a doctor close to the case told AFP.

Another official said that though Karl was hit several times in the fight, his body was "not covered in blows".

The boy's death was the number one story in newspapers and broadcast media Friday, appearing to confirm a growing problem of violence in French schools.
