BEIRUT, July 29 (AFP) - An Air France plane en route from Dubai to Paris made an emergency landing in Beirut overnight Wednesday following a false bomb alert, airport security sources in the Lebanese capital said.

The pilot asked for permission to land the Boeing 777 after he discovered a letter warning that a bomb had been placed on board, the source said.

Passengers were evacuated and the aircraft was searched, but the alert turned out to be false, allowing the flight to resume to Paris.

The sources did not say how the pilot came across the letter detailing the threat, nor whether it was signed.

Airport authorities in Beirut confirmed the incident, adding that the flight was carrying a total of 261 passengers and crew at the time.
