TUNIS, April 16 (AFP) - The French embassy in Tunisia said it was the target of a hoax bomb alert on Friday.

A telephone caller warned in French of "an explosion at midday" in the embassy, which is located in the centre of the capital, Tunis. The caller did not claim to be from any group or make any demands.

The embassy said the "usual" precautions were taken but the building was not evacuated.

The north African country, a former French colony, was home to the alleged brains behind the attacks in Madrid last month which killed nearly 200 people.

Tunisian-born Serhane Ben Abdelmajid Fakhet was one of seven people suspected of involvement in that attack who blew themselves up in a Madrid apartment on April 3 as Spanish police were closing in on them.
