LOURDES, France, Jan 25, 2007 (AFP) - The body of a British woman whose death was concealed for months by her elderly mother, has been discovered at her home near the French Catholic sanctuary of Lourdes, police said Thursday.

The 46-year-old woman, who lived in the town of Lourdes with her mother and young daughter, is thought to have died of cancer in September. Investigators believe the grandmother hoped to hide the death from her granddaughter.

Alerted by the child's teachers who sensed that something was amiss in the family, police discovered the body last Thursday.

According to sources close to the investigation, the grandmother spent most of her time in religious devotion and both women refused conventional medecine.

The child, aged around 10, was due to be reunited with her father in Britain in the coming days. No charges were due to be brought in the case.
