PARIS, June 1 (AFP) - Two hundred and sixty-two French beaches have received a Blue Flag endorsement this year signifying that they are clean and safe bathing areas, a statement from the European non-profit group running the label said Tuesday.

The list of French beaches met 27 criteria showing they complied with EU directives and other standards, including having lifeguards, waste management, bans on vehicle access and regulations to protect flora and fauna, said the Foundation for Environmental Education.

The Danish-based group oversees Blue Flag awards for beaches across Europe and in South Africa. Many tourists, particularly those from northern European countries, look for the symbol when selecting vacation destinations.

France comes third in the list of countries with the most number of Blue Flag beaches, after Spain (with 450 designated beaches) and Greece (with 378).

A full list of beaches is available on the website www.blueflag.org.
