PARIS, June 14 (AFP) - The Blue Flag label signifying an environmentally friendly bathing area has been hoisted over 271 French beaches in time for what promises to be a hot summer, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) said in a statement Tuesday.

The endorsement covers many spots along France's Mediterranean and Atlantic coastline which local authorities submitted for evaluation by the non-profit organisation.

The foundation's blue flag is given when a beach meets a number of criteria, including the suitability of the water for swimming and measures to ensure waste and rubbish do not pollute the area.

It is separate from tests conducted by the French health ministry which carries out two-weekly analyses of beaches during the summer season whose results are published on the internet.
