PARIS, Jan 8 (AFP) - French novelist Pierre Daninos, best known for his best-seller "The diary of Major Thompson", died here Friday at the age of 91, his entourage said Saturday.

Born in Paris in 1913, Daninos began a journalistic career in 1931 and later published several books, including "The diary of Major Thompson", the adventures of Major W. Marmaduke Thompson, a humorous Englishman living in France, trying to adapt to French ways and falling in love with a Frenchwoman.

The novel, which makes fun of Englishmen, was immensely popular in France in the 1950s.

It sold 1.19 million copies in France alone, and translations were sold in 27 countries.
