PRISTINA, Serbia-Montenegro, Sept 6 (AFP) - French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier made an unannounced visit to the UN-administered Serbian province of Kosovo on Monday, days after a French general took control of the NATO-led peacekeeping force here.

Officials said Barnier was due to meet local leaders as well as the new NATO commander in Kosovo, French General Yves de Kermabon, and the chief of the UN mission here, Danish diplomat Soeren Jessen-Petersen.

Kosovo has been under UN administration since the end of the 1998-99 war in the province, when NATO warplanes drove out Serbian forces to halt a campaign of repression of the ethnic Albanian majority.

Barnier is also expected to visit Macedonia and Albania during a two-day tour of the southern Balkans.
