TOULOUSE, France, Feb 16 (AFP) - France's national weather service on Wednesday issued an avalanche alert in the southwestern Pyrenees mountains due to heavy snowfall in the region in recent days.

According to Meteo-France, more than a meter (three feet) of snow has fallen since Sunday at altitudes of more than 1,800 meters (6,000 feet).

"Carried by violent winds, this snow has accumulated in large amounts, particularly on southern slopes, and avalanches of powdery snow have been reported," the weather service said in a statement.

Meteo-France advised drivers to check weather conditions before heading onto mountain roads and urged skiers to take the necessary precautions.
