Ariane 5 rocket puts US satellites into orbit

KOUROU, French Guiana, Aug 14, 2007 (AFP) - An Ariane 5 rocket blasted off here on Tuesday and put into orbit Japanese and US telecommunications satellites, Arianespace said. The rocket, the 33rd launch of an Ariane 5 and the third this year, lifted off at 2344 GMT and successfully placed both satellites into geostationary transfer orbit, the company said.

The rocket, the 33rd launch of an Ariane 5 and the third this year, lifted off at 2344 GMT and successfully placed both satellites into geostationary transfer orbit, the company said.

The Spaceway 3, built by Boeing and operated by Hughes Network Systems, is the first element of a new network to provide multimedia services including video on demand across North America.

The BSAT-3A, built by Lockheed Martin, is to provide television coverage for the Japanese operator B-SAT Corporation.

Ariane space plans six launches of Ariane 5 rockets this year.
