ArcelorMittal, the world's leading steel maker, said on Wednesday that talks with Australian mining group BHP Billiton on the possibility of joint operations in Liberia and Guinea had ended with no agreement.

"The companies were unable to reach a commercial agreement," ArcelorMittal said in a statement.

The talks on the joint venture had begun in January.

"ArecelorMittal will continue to develop its operations and iron ore interests in Liberia independently and is excited by the potential of this business."
