RAMALLAH, West Bank, Nov 10 (AFP) - The Palestinian leadership will not announce Yasser Arafat's death before being officially informed by French authorities, PLO executive committee member Salah Rafat told AFP Wednesday.

"There will be no statement from the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah before we are officially informed by French authorities of the death of Yasser Arafat," Rafat told AFP.

Arafat was on Wednesday clinging to life in a French military hospital in the Paris suburb of Clamart, where he was airlifted for urgent medical treatment on October 29.

Earlier, a Palestinian official who asked not to be named, told AFP that Arafat's death would be announced sometime Wednesday, following meetings of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) executive committee and the Fatah central committee in Ramallah.

Arafat's Fatah movement is the main component of the PLO.

The announcement of the ailing 75-year-old leader's death had been expected after the return here early Wednesday of four top Palestinians from a visit to the Percy military hospital, where Arafat was in intensive care.
