Angry Gazans mob French minister at hospital: AFP
Angry Palestinian demonstrators mobbed French Foreign Minister Michele Alliot-Marie as she visited a Gaza hospital on Friday, an AFP correspondent said.
Around 30 demonstrators pushed and shoved the security detail surrounding the minister as she entered Al-Quds hospital in Gaza City, the correspondent said, although they did not manage to physically reach Alliot-Marie.
The incident occurred shortly after her convoy was stopped by protesters in northern Gaza reacting to a statement about "war crimes" that was mistakenly attributed to the minister when she met captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit's parents in Jerusalem a day earlier.
At the meeting, father Noam Shalit asked Alliot-Marie to press the European Union to "condemn as a war crime" the detention of his son, a correspondent at the scene said.
But shortly afterwards, Israel's public radio posted a story on its Arabic-language website mistakenly quoting Alliot-Marie as saying the EU "must condemn the war crime that Hamas is committing by keeping Gilad Shalit in captivity."
