PARIS, Aug 9, 2007 (AFP) - A French judge sparked angry protests on Thursday by granting bail to a suspected paedophile arrested at Disneyland Paris for filming young girls without their underwear.

The suspect, aged 50, was arrested Sunday after tourists spotted him filming little girls who had pulled down their knickers to scratch themselves, police said. He is suspected of spraying them with itching powder.

During a search of the man's home near Paris, police found a stash of child pornography files on his computer, and DVD recordings that showed him molesting young girls, including his nieces and friends' children.

He was placed under investigation -- the first step to indictment -- for rape, sexual assault on a minor, infliction of bodily harm and possession of pornographic images, but was not detained pending trial.

The police union Synergie-Officiers said it was "outraged" by the judge's "totally irresponsible" decision to grant bail to the man, who has allegedly confessed to the accusations against him.

The prosecution service has appealed the decision to grant bail.
