PARIS, Aug 28 (AFP) - French serial killer Michel Fourniret, who has confessed to nine murders of mostly young women in the 1990s in France and Belgium, had already assaulted up to 18 girls from 1977 to 1984, the daily Le Parisien reported Saturday.

As early as 1984, Fourniret, arrested for assaulting a woman in the Paris region, had confessed to 16 to 18 attacks, including a rape, since 1977.

The paper quoted a former police inspector in Versailles, Patrick Rousselot, as saying that some of the alleged victims "were under 15".

Fourniret, 62, was arrested in Belgium in June 2003 for the attempted abduction of a young girl, who escaped and led police to him. He confessed to the murders in June after his estranged wife turned on him.
