PARIS, Dec 1 (AFP) - Alcatel, the French telecommunications equipment maker, said Wednesday its German subsidiary Alcatel SEL plans to cut 550 jobs next year as part of a restructuring plan.

The bulk of the job cuts will be made in the southwestern city of Stuttgart.

The move is in response to lower demand for traditional voice-switching systems, Alcatel said, and will involve reduction of sales and sales support teams, and a streamlining of administrative and financing activities.

A total of 600 jobs will be cut in 2005 as part of the programme, while 50 jobs will be created.

Alcatel SEL currently employs around 5,300 people.
