President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday warned Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb that its murder of a 78-year-old French hostage in the Sahara desert "will not go unpunished."

"Dear compatriots, this crime committed against Michel Germaneau will not go unpunished," he said in a television address after the group said it killed the hostage to avenge a failed rescue attempt that left six of its members dead.

Germaneau, an aid worker, was kidnapped in northern Niger on April 19.
