PARIS, June 10 (AFP) - Air France said Thursday US carriers Northwest Airlines and Continental Airlines had applied to join the SkyTeam code-sharing alliance, with full membership expected in September.

Both Northwest and Continental were expected to join the SkyTeam alliance as part of Air France's merger with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, which is also poised to become a SkyTeam member.

"Together, the three pending members will add more than 120 new global destinations, more than 110 new lounges and more than 5,500 new daily departures for customers," SkyTeam said.

KLM already has a code-sharing alliance with Northwest, while Continental and Northwest also have a code-sharing deal with Delta Airlines, which is already a SkyTeam member.

Besides Air France and Delta, current SkyTeam members are Aeromexico, Alitalia, CSA Czech Airlines and Korean Air.
