Some 250 foreign citizens left Abidjan on Monday as the city was gripped by fighting amid an offensive by Alassane Ouattara to oust his rival for the presidency, the French military said.

"Four planes left for Dakar and Lome. There were about 250 foreign citizens, including French," said spokesman for the French forces Licorne (Unicorn), Frederic Daguillon.

On Sunday 167 foreigners left Abidjan for the capitals of Senegal and Togo.
