AU 'vigorously condemns' execution of French hostage in Mali
The African Union "vigorously condemns" the execution of a 78-year-old French hostage in Mali by Al-Qaeda's North African arm, the body's top security official said Monday.
"Nothing could justify the execution of a hostage," Ramtane Lamamra, the AU's peace and security commissioner, told reporters on the sidelines of the continental body's 15th heads of state summit in Kampala.
Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) said Sunday it had executed Michel Germaneau, who was working with a small aid agency to improve health services and schools when he was captured in Niger in April.
"Al-Qaeda has demonstrated the little respect it has for human life... This is another manifestation of a behaviour which is totally barbaric and unacceptable," Lamamra said.
