Paris police and union leaders gave wildly different estimates Thursday of the size of a march against plans to raise the retirement age, with the official estimate 65,000 and labour's 300,000.

In a foretaste of the battle of figures that often ensues after a French protest, the police figure was 15,000 lower than its estimate for a previous rally on September 7, whereas the CGT union's was 30,000 higher.
