MELUN (AFP) - Twenty-two people were taken into custody following a police swoop on nine Chinese-owned restaurants in the Paris region, police said on Thursday.

Seven restaurant managers, all employed by the same owner, a Chinese resident of Les Mureaux northwest of the capital, are suspected of tax fraud and of employing illegal immigrants.

The managers were released following questioning Wednesday night and could face possible charges. Several of the 15 others, all illegal immigrants, were taken to detention centres with a view to being deported.

Two of the restaurants were shut down for health and safety reasons.
