GRENOBLE, France, May 31, 2007 (AFP) - French police said Wednesday they had uncovered a scam under which the national unemployment insurance agency had been defrauded of 20 million euros (26.8 million dollars) since 1996.

Twenty people were held for questioning for suspected involvement in the affair, police said, following a vast operation launched on May 23 and 24 in several departments in southern France.

The six main suspects belong to the same family, police said. If convicted, they risk a maximum 10-year prison term and a stiff fine.
