How to look slimmer in your clothes Personal stylist Carina van der Kloet shares these tips to help you look your slender best.

January follows a month full of festivities and good food. Unfortunately, this can have a negative impact on how you look in your clothes. Below you’ll find styling tips that can help make you look slim. When you know how to dress your body, you can easily look like you’ve shed 10 pounds.

Highlight a good feature
Draw attention to one of your good features with details and accessories. Think about what feature you want people to focus on when they look at you. For example if you have wide hips, you can wear a spread-collar shirt or large lapel to widen your chest and shoulders. This creates more of a waist. You can also try shoulder pads to balance your hips. For the appearance of narrower hips, you should remove inside pocket linings in pants and skirts.

Minimise your tummy
If you have a tummy and want to disguise it, always blouson your top by pulling it a bit out of your waistband. Never pull your t-shirt tight around your waist. You can wear a long and open jacket or cardigan on top of it. Never end your top at or slightly above the widest point of your belly. A ruched top or shirt-tail hem are also great ways to conceal your belly.


Select material wisely
The material you choose has a great impact on the way you look. Shiny fabrics accentuate curves and make you look fuller (think about sport pants). Avoid skin-clinging fabrics like lycra at all times. Mat fabrics such as flannel make you look slimmer. Chunky knits add weight. Fine knits look slimmer.

Utilise vertical lines
You can use vertical lines for a slimming effect. For example, dressing in one color, wearing fitted sleeves and vertical stripes. Avoid layers and belts in contrasting colors.

You can wear dark colors such as navy blue or forest green. Choose solid colors instead of busy patterns; they only make you look bigger.


Get the right fit
Show off your silhouette. Don’t hide everything. Avoid wearing loose-fitting and shapeless clothing, such as boxy jackets. You look heavier in oversized sweaters and cardigans.

However, don’t exaggerate by wearing very tight fitting clothes.

A better choice is to go for a fitted jacket with shape. The right fit and shape is of great importance!
 
Clothes affect the way we feel and move. The finishing touch is moving gracefully and standing up straight. This allows you to really look the part!
