Thinking of touring the UK or Ireland by car, but wary of driving on the left? Rick Steves offers visitors and newcomers some handy tips on how best to tackle driving in Britain, without turning into a nervous wreck. While most first-time visitors to Europe choo-choose to travel by train, consider the convenience of driving. Behind the wheel you're totally free, going where you want, when you want.
Driving in Great Britain and Ireland is wonderful — once you remember to stay on the left and after you've mastered the roundabouts. But be warned: every year I get some emails from travelling readers advising me that, for them, trying to drive in Great Britain and Ireland was a nerve-wracking and regrettable mistake. Here's a tip: if you want to get a little slack on the roads, drop by a petrol station or auto shop and buy a green ‘P’ (probationary driver with licence) sign to put in your car window.

You've convinced me, Steve, we'll walk in Belfast. I've never driven in the U.K. only in Berlin, which I'll never do again because of battles over parking spaces. Krieg, man. So why don't you do an in-depth show on driving in Europe? I can imagine your commentary. And by the way, go to Groeningen. Centraal Station is a replica of Amsterdam, fine museum, Hartog Ian beer. Tot zo (we met once outside a cafe in afore-mentioned town), Bob
