AMSTERDAM - One British-based company and four US-owned organisations appear in a ranking of the top ten best companies to work for in India.

The ranking was compiled by HR consulting firm Mercer Human Resource Consulting; Business Today, India's top business magazine and Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS), a leading international market research firm.

HSBC is ranked the tenth best company to work for, while the four US-based employers in the rankings include Johnson & Johnson and three IT firms.  The remaining five employers are Indian-owned companies.

This is the sixth annual survey of the Best Companies to Work for in India and more than 130 organisations registered to take part.

In this year's survey, meaningful work and rewards, greater control over careers, increased focus on learning and development and individual attention emerged as the key expectations of employees.

The winners of the survey are companies that have made substantial investment in their people, infrastructure, facilities, technology and HR systems. Stock options, flexible working, telecommuting, redressal and grievance committees and customised training and development opportunities seem to be standard fare at these organisations.

Most companies in the top ten have used technology to build integrated HR systems and processes. This is turn has benefited employees who get access to information related to HR policies, performance management, training and career planning online.

Another interesting finding this year has been the inclusion of medium-size organisations in the top ten rankings, reiterating the fact that investment in strong HR policies and employee development are not restricted to large organisations.
