22/11/2011Where and how to learn French

Where and how to learn French Learning French will help you acclimatise and take full advantage of your stay in France, whether it's for a few months or for a lifetime.

Being an expat in France is not an easy task. If you think your English will be useful, you are most probably mistaken. People in France are very keen on their own language, so if you want to be accepted there, do not waste your time looking at the Eifel Tower -- start learning some French.

There are a couple of ways to get acquainted with the language.

If you are already in France, take classes in a French school. The well-known institution Alliance Francaise has branches almost anywhere. It is dedicated to promoting French throughout the world: classes, cultural activities, and French certification. So search for the branch nearest you.

Studying with a personal tutor is another excellent way to learn French. You'll get personal attention and plenty of opportunity to talk. On the downside, it's more expensive than a class, and you will be interacting with only one person. To find a French tutor, check the announcement boards at your local community centres or library.

If you don't have time to take a French class or learn with a personal tutor, a French correspondence class might be a good option for you -- you'll be learning on your own time, but with the guidance of a professor to whom you can direct all of your questions.

If you truly don`t have the time or the money to take any classes, you can learn on your own. The internet can provide all sorts of study materials -- visual, written, and recorded. Another independent learning tool is French software. However, not all software is created equal. A programme may promise to teach you a year's worth of French in a week, but since that's impossible more expensive software often -- but not always - means better software.

However you acquire it, knowledge is power. So as long as you are determined to study, nothing and no one can get in your way!

I agree with the previous comments - I took a French class at Nouqa Langues in Paris, and it definitely helped me love Paris! It was much easier to enjoy my time there...I had a great tutor, in a one-on-one individual class. The school was very friendly as well as the professor. I learned a lot so I would also recommend Nouqa quite a bit...
