22/08/2008Lose weight? Integrate!

Lose weight? Integrate! Integration into mainstream Dutch society is good for your figure. That's basically the conclusion of research conducted by the Social and Cultural Planning Office of the Netherlands (SCP).

Too many migrants of Turkish, Moroccan and Antillean origin are overweight, but migrants from these ethnic groups who speak Dutch well and have contact with Dutch people are considerably slimmer and have less chance of becoming obese.

scalesAccording to the report entitled Minderheden meer gewicht ("Minorities More Weight"), the body mass index or BMI of 55 percent of Turks, 51 percent of Moroccans and 50 percent of Antilleans living in the Netherlands is too high.

The figures get an even more alarming dimension when gender is taken into account. While the report refers to overweight men, more and more women are in the obese category. 20 percent of Turkish and Moroccan women are obese compared with 12 percent of native Dutch women, while a quarter of Antillean and Surinam women fall into this category.

Comfort eating
So, is integration into mainstream society some kind of magic formula for losing weight, or is there a more plausible explanation? Jaco Dagevos from the SCP points out that the role model for the perfect woman is different among ethnic minorities. Rounded curves go hand and hand with prosperity. Ethnic women who are mixing with their Dutch counterparts will have a different image of what ideal beauty constitutes.

And then there's the whole aspect of "comfort eating". Unemployment among ethnic minorities is higher than the Dutch average; more women are unemployed than men, while elderly ethnic women especially - the least integrated - tend to sit at home and have all the time in the world on their hands to dip, and dip, and dip into their favourite foods. Then, when you add depression to the scenario, the kilograms go on a journey of their own. The result: increased chances of contracting diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Common attitude
Whatever the underlying reasons may be, the publication of the SCP's report has the unfortunate side effect. It's pretty much a red rag to a bull for the many Islamophobes among the Dutch population. One of many similar reactions on the website of the populist daily De Telegraaf reflects a common attitude: "Yeah, if you sit on your fat backside all day doing nothing and just saunter once a week to the market... Maybe you should pray less and get a job?"

I think non-integrated people are probably fatter because they don't eat Dutch food. It's not a very tasty cuisine, which of course causes people to eat less.

Why is it that the study only focused on Turks, Moroccans and Antilleans living in the Netherlands? Why not focus on anyone who does not speak Dutch! PLEASE!!!
Further more where is this study published and what was the use of it?
It concerns me that this is just fixed science, statistics can be misused so easily to manipulate the public.
Further more people just speculate as why this study had these findngs but nothing is done to really address the bigger question as "WHY" instead they state if you are intergrated or speak Dutch you are more likely not to be obese??? There is not any proof of that! We have many immingrants in my country and just because they do not speak the native language does not cause them to become obese! This is all BS propaganda.

are overweight I have hardly ever seen a slim dutch women but I have seen a lot of slim Turks.

Utter nonsense.
Being neither Dutch, Turkish, Moroccan or Antillean I can not help felling flabbergasted by the amount of empty and hollow rhetoric in this article.
Nice try, though.

Mevrouw Jacqueline Nolan I seriously recommend you to re-read that research. Someone missed the point of it.

Did you ever consider that genetics might play an important role in all this? Or do you really believe that the majority of Dutch people tend to have a slim figure because of their diets and lifestyle?

Darwin would have been cutting his wrists if he would have read your article.

i would be interested to know whether there is a difference in the metabolism of people coming originally from shouthern climates.

could the cold weather, the calory-light food and the business rythm for an average person) in the netherlands, have an effect on losing weight for an average southern type ?

the study sounds interesting from a metabolistic point of view, but it is not discussed as it should in my opinion.

I believe this note to be insulting for men kind not only naming it inmigrants. How can mixing up with dutch help people from other countries to lose weight????? its outrageous that you even mention praying here! how can you put their beliefs into this when it has nothing to do? this is the reason people from other countries feel like guinea pigs in this type of countries and they dont get treated as the human rights law says...fat ass? I have seen more dutch woman having huge asses and who is talking about them and about this sitting on the couch shouting and screaming to their husbands? maybe they dont pray as much but sure they are controversial. how come this you will feel to be insulting and you pretend we dont feel insulted by your comments? IGNORANT STUDY..THATS WHAT IT IS.
