Sweden jails Frenchman for people smuggling 02/02/2007 00:00
STOCKHOLM, Feb 1, 2007 (AFP) - A Frenchman was sentenced to a year in prison in Sweden on Thursday for smuggling a large group of Indians into the Scandinavian country, media reported.
The 49-year-old man, whose identity was not disclosed, was found guilty of "aggravated human trafficking", regional daily Soedermanlands Nyheter reported in its online edition.
The district court of Nykoeping, located about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of Stockholm, also banned the man from returning to Sweden for a period of five years after having served his sentence.
The man was arrested in July at Skavsta airport near Nykoeping while he was with a group of Indians who were due to travel to Italy in possession of false passports, the paper said.
A police inquiry found that the smuggler had helped some 100 Indians enter Sweden illegally, the paper said.
An Indian arrested at the airport at the same time as the Frenchman has already been sentenced for human trafficking, according to Soedermanlands Nyheter.
