Sentenced confirmed for 49 'voluntary reapers' 02/06/2007 00:00

PARIS, Jun 2, 2007 - The appeal court of Orleans confirmed the sentences of 49 'voluntary reapers'  Friday for the slashing GM crops growing in open fields.

Most sentences were suspended but the spokesman of the Confédération paysanne, Jean-Emile Sanchez, will serve a two months sentence.

"86 percent of French citizens are favorble to a moratorium on open field GM crops," Jean-Emile Sanchez said. "We hoped the appeal court would have had the wisdom to drop the charges, the rest is now up to politicians", he added.

In front of the tribunal, the spokesman revealed his intention to seize the European court of Human rights.
