Sarkozy to hold talks with Airbus unions 02/03/2007 00:00
BORDEAUX, France, March 1, 2007 (AFP) - French presidential contender Nicolas Sarkozy said Thursday he planned to meet labour unions to discuss several proposals to help Airbus, the crisis-hit European aircraft maker.
"I will meet the unions and I will make a certain number of proposals," said Sarkozy during a campaign swing through the southern city of Bordeaux.
"Airbus is a remarkable success, it is an essential asset to our economy and I don't think we can let it down," said the candidate of the governing party.
Sarkozy, who is leading in the polls over Socialist candidate Segolene Royal for the April-May vote, bailed out French industrial giant Alstom in 2004 when he was economics minister.
Alstom received more than two billion euros in state aid coupled with assistance from creditor banks.
Airbus on Wednesday announced plans to cut 10,000 jobs in Germany, France, Spain and Britain as part of a strategy to pull the European aircraft maker out of crisis.
Workers at Alstom's four factories in France have announced plans to stage strike action on Tuesday to protest the restructuring plan.
