Regional chief accused of pulling strings for wife 05/09/2006 00:00
PARIS, Sept 4, 2006 (AFP) - Jean-Paul Huchon, a leading member of France's opposition Socialist Party (PS), was ordered to stand trial for corruption Monday over allegations he used his position as president of the Ile-de-France regional council to obtain a job for his wife.
Investigations into Huchon, 60, were launched in late 2004 after police received an anonymous letter claiming that employees at the council's Paris offices were being paid by private companies in return for contracts.
Huchon, who was elected to the council presidency in 2004, will stand trial alongside his wife Dominique Le Texier and two others. A date was to be set Tuesday.
He has vehemently denied the charges.
Le Texier, 55, was employed in 2004 to take charge of an environmental film festival paid for by the Ile-de-France council.
