Police end sit-in by illegal immigrants 01/08/2007 00:00

LILLE, France, Aug 1, 2007 (AFP) - French police in the northern city of Lille on Wednesday morning broke up a sit-in by illegal immigrants, some of whom have been on hunger strike to demand residence papers.

Police sealed off a trade union building where some 180 people have been living in tents in the garden for the last week. Those without papers were then driven to a holding centre outside the city.

Around 60 of the protesters said they had been on hunger-strike since mid-June, taking nothing but tea, coffee and sugared water.

The local prefect -- state-appointed governor -- said decisions on whether to issue residence permits would be taken on a case-by-case basis.
