Palestinian leader Abbas wins French support 02/07/2007 00:00

PARIS,  July 2, 2007 (AFP) - Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on Friday won backing from France following talks with President Nicolas Sarkozy, two weeks after Hamas rivals took over the Gaza Strip.

"President Nicolas Sarkozy has asserted France's support for the Palestinian Authority. He was very clear and frank in his support for the Palestinian people," Abbas said after a 45-minute meeting at the Elysee presidential palace.

Sarkozy spokesman David Martinon confirmed that the French president had stated "his full and complete support, without ambiguity" to Abbas.

"We want your success, you are the guarantor of peace, that's clear," the spokesman quoted Sarkozy as telling Abbas.

The visit was Abbas's first to France since Sarkozy took over from Jacques Chirac on May 16.

The trip had been set for June 18 but the Palestinians cancelled it because of the crisis in the Gaza Strip, now in the hands of Abbas's rivals from Hamas.

France has announced that it will resume bilateral aid to the Palestinian Authority.

Abbas arrived in Paris from Geneva where he urged delegates to a congress of the Socialist International to isolate Hamas and to re-launch the peace process.
