Government predicts high growth rate 02/07/2007 00:00

PARIS, July 2, 2007 (AFP) - The French government expects the economy to grow by between 2.25 percent and 2.75 percent in 2008, Economy Minister Christine Lagarde said in an interview Monday.

"According to our predictions, the growth rate will be between 2.25 percent and 2.75 percent in 2008," she told Le Parisien daily, adding that "if we can do better, that would be a bonus."

On June 28, Lagarde said the government was aiming for 2.5 percent growth next year, which she said was "optimistic."

In May, the Organisation for Cooperation and Economic Development (OECD) said the French economy would grow by 2.2 percent this year and in 2008, while the European Commission predicted growth of 2.4 and 2.3 percent respectively.
