France Telecom benefits from emerging markets 01/02/2007 00:00

PARIS, Feb 1, 2007 (AFP) - France Telecom on Thursday reported a 7.5 percent gain in sales last year, powered by its mobile phone unit and a strong performance in emerging markets, but said net income had declined.

Sales rose to 51.7 billion euros (67.3 billion dollars), in line with forecasts from analysts at Exane BNP Paribas.

The company said its net earnings last year would fall in a range of 4.0 to 4.2 billion euros, compared with 5.7 billion euros in 2005. Precise profit figures are to be released March 6.

"We are satisfied with these results ... which confirm France Telecom's capacity to meet its financial objectives," finance director Gervais Pellissuer said in a teleconference.

He said sales growth last year was driven by the company's mobile phone unit, where revenue was up 5.0 percent, and by double-digit gains in emerging market countries.
