Cigarette prices to increase 02/08/2007 00:00

Paris, August 2, 2007 – The budget ministry confirmed plans to increase the price of cigarettes. The price increase of 6 percent will take effect on Monday, making a EUR 5 pack of cigarette 30 cents more expensive to the end user.

Tobacconist federations have expressed their concerns, saying cigarette smuggling and over-the-border sales are likely to increase. “It’s too much, too soon,” said René Le Pape, president e of the confederation of tobacconist.

Budget minister, Eric Woerth, said the border police had been instructed to increase its watch over usual smuggling routs.
