LONDON, March 2, 2007 (AFP) - Britain's Foreign Office said Friday it was urgently checking reports of a kidnapping in Ethiopia, after eleven French nationals and three Britons were reported missing.

"We understand that a number of Western nationals are reported as missing in north-east Ethiopia. The embassy staff are urgently checking with their Ethiopian counterparts," a Foreign Office spokesman told AFP.

An official from tour operator Origins Ethiopia has said that the French and Britons are missing, while France's ambassador to Ethiopia, Stephane Gompertz, added that two groups of Western tourists had been kidnapped.
