Avalanches kill one in French Alps 04/01/2007 00:00

GRENOBLE, France, Jan 3, 2007 (AFP) - A 17-year-old Frenchman was killed and three others injured in the French Alps in a series of avalanches on Tuesday and Wednesday, ski resort officials said.

Emergency services recovered the body of the skier on Tuesday evening in the northern Alpine resort of Les Arcs, where he was trapped in an avalanche after setting out alone in a snowstorm.

Three people skiiing off-piste were also injured in separate snowslides on Wednesday in the nearby resorts of Chamonix, Tignes and Meribel. One of the victims, a local 20-year-old man who suffered a heart attack, was in hospital in a critical condition.

Weather experts have issued an avalanche warning of four on a five-point scale for the entire northern French Alps, where 30 to 80 centimetres (12 to 30 inches) of snow have fallen in the past 48 hours.
